The Two Numbers That Matter
Fasting glucose is a snapshot. Blood taken after an overnight fast, telling a doctor where your glucose sits when nothing has been eaten for hours. Quick, cheap and a single moment in time.
HbA1c is the average. Glucose in your blood attaches slowly to haemoglobin inside red blood cells, and those cells live around three months. Measure how much haemoglobin is carrying glucose and you have a reasonable picture of the last eight to twelve weeks — not one morning, not one bad week.
Between them these two answer the question most people are actually asking when they start reading supplement pages.
Why HbA1c Is Hard To Fool
A fasting test can be influenced by a careful evening before it. HbA1c cannot, because it is averaging a season rather than a night. That is exactly why doctors lean on it and why it is the number that tells you whether a change you made actually held.
It has limits worth knowing. Anything affecting red blood cell lifespan — certain anaemias, some haemoglobin variants, recent significant blood loss, pregnancy — can distort the result. Your doctor knows this and will interpret it against the rest of the picture rather than in isolation.
What The Ranges Mean, Roughly
Interpretation belongs to a clinician who knows your history, so treat what follows as orientation rather than diagnosis. Broadly, results are grouped into a normal band, an intermediate band often described as prediabetes, and a band consistent with diabetes. Where the exact cut-offs sit varies slightly between countries and guidelines.
The useful part is not memorising thresholds. It is that an intermediate result is genuinely actionable — it is the point at which changes to food, movement and sleep have the most leverage they will ever have, and the point at which a doctor can help most.
Why Test Before You Buy
Consider the alternative. You buy a two-month supply, take it faithfully, and at the end have no idea whether anything changed because nothing was ever measured. You feel roughly the same, which tells you almost nothing, and so you buy another two months.
Now consider the other order. You get a baseline, make whatever changes you intend to make — food, walking, sleep, and a supplement if you want one — and retest in three months. Now the answer is a number instead of an impression.
That sequence costs very little and it is the single most useful thing anybody reading a page like this can do.
What A Supplement Can And Cannot Move
Say this plainly. Nothing on this site treats or manages a diagnosed condition, and Chromium supporting normal insulin function is a modest contribution rather than a lever on a lab result.
If your numbers are outside a healthy range, the response is a doctor and a plan, not a bottle. If they are inside it and you want daily support alongside sensible habits, that is a different and much smaller question. The safety checklist covers who should raise it with a clinician first regardless.
Symptoms That Should Not Wait For A Test
Urinating far more than usual and waking at night to do it, thirst that will not settle, losing weight without trying, vision that blurs and clears, cuts healing slowly, or numbness and tingling in the feet. Several of those together mean an appointment rather than an order.
General information only. This entry is not medical advice and Sugar Reset is not a treatment for diabetes. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, being under 18, a diagnosed condition or any prescription all mean putting it in front of a doctor or pharmacist before the first dose. Full detail on the safety checklist.
Questions On This Entry
Short answers to what readers ask about this topic.
What is the difference between HbA1c and fasting glucose?
Fasting glucose is a single snapshot after an overnight fast. HbA1c averages roughly the last eight to twelve weeks, which makes it much harder to influence in the short term.
Can a supplement change my HbA1c?
Nothing on this site claims to. Chromium supporting normal insulin function is a modest contribution, not a lever on a lab result.
Should I test before starting a supplement?
It is the most useful thing you can do. Without a baseline you have no way of knowing whether two months of anything achieved something.
What can distort an HbA1c reading?
Anything affecting red blood cell lifespan, including some anaemias, certain haemoglobin variants, recent blood loss and pregnancy. Your doctor accounts for this.
